The 13 Best Sex Positions to Stimulate Your Clit
The easiest way to use a bullet vibrator is to place the tip on your clitoris and see how your body reacts to different vibration levels and patterns. But if that’s too intense, move the tip away from your clit for some indirect sensation. You can also start by drawing circles around your vulva with the tip of the bullet as a sort of warm-up before zeroing in on your clit.
Because bullets are so small, they can also be a pretty seamless addition to penetrative sex. Either partner can hold the bullet on the receiving partner’s clit while the penetrating partner enters them with their penis or strap-on. Pro tip: It’s easiest to do this during a from-behind sex position, like doggy style, because you don’t have to worry about trying to fit a hand in between your bodies. Having the penetrating partner reach around from behind or having the receiving partner press the bullet on their vulva will likely be most comfortable and satisfying for everyone involved.
Whatever you do, however, do not put a bullet vibrator inside you because its small size can make it extremely difficult (not to mention, awkward) to get out.

Wand Vibrators
Made famous by the Magic Wand, this category of vibrators are specifically designed for clitoral stimulation, says Howard, and a lot of people like to put them directly on their vulva, applying different pressures until they orgasm. Like bullets, wands may also appeal to beginners because the head is so big, you can’t really go wrong with where you place it on your vulva. You’ll feel strong, rumbly vibrations all over, which can make it super easy to orgasm.
While both wands and bullets are designed with the same goal in mind, they differ significantly in type and intensity of vibration. Because wands are bigger, heavier toys with stronger motors, their lowest level of vibration might feel as intense as a bullet’s highest level. Some people really enjoy the deeper, more rumbly vibrations of a wand, while others prefer the more pinpointed buzzy vibes of a bullet. So, if you know you enjoy a lot of clit stimulation, a wand toy might be just the vibe for you.
How to use a wand vibrator:
With the wand set on its lowest vibration setting, begin by placing the head of the wand on your vulva. Depending on how your body responds to this initial sensation, you may want to use the handle to move the head around in small circles on your clit, angle the head in one direction or another, or even remove the head from your vulva and use it to massage your inner thighs as a way to warm up before returning to your vulva.
Many people enjoy using a wand vibrator over their underwear and even pants because the added texture can be really fun to play with, says Stephanie Alys, co-founder of MysteryVibe. Plus, “it allows you to experiment with higher power settings,” she adds, without overstimulating your clit. So, if the vibrations feel too strong on your bare skin, you can always try that to lessen the intensity while also experimenting with different sensations. One sensation you should avoid, however, is the feeling of shower or bath water against your wand as the vast majority of these vibrators are not waterproof (although that is beginning to change with LeWand’s new submersible wand!).
While wands are bigger and heavier than other vibes, they are still a great option for partnered play, says Howard. If you’re having penetrative sex, the long handle can allow either partner to hold the wand on the receiving partner’s clit or other erogenous zones (again, this is easiest in a from-behind sex position). The long handle and wide head also come in handy during outercourse—a.k.a. non-penetrative sex—since the giving partner doesn’t have to worry about being super precise with where they place the toy on the receiving partner’s genitals to ensure they have a pleasurable experience. (The all-over vibrations will take care of that!)

Clitoral Suction Vibrators
First introduced by the sex toy brand Womanizer about a decade ago, clitoral suction vibrators use either suction or air pressure technology to provide a sucking stimulation on the clit (or tip of the penis) that mimics the feeling of receiving oral sex. If you enjoy receiving cunnilingus from a human mouth, chances are you’ll really enjoy experiencing a similar sensation from a vibrator.
While this is a relatively newer category of vibrator, it’s quickly become one of the most popular—and for good reason. “People love these clitoral sucking toys because it gives them orgasms in, like, three seconds,” says Howard.
How to use a clitoral suction vibrator:
All you have to do is place the suction head on your clit, and then increase the intensity of the suction based on how your body responds. Depending on the size and shape of your clitoral hood, you may need to hold that up with one hand in order to locate your clit and put the vibrator directly on it. And remember to use some lube—it mimics the saliva that would be on the clitoris from a partner’s mouth.
With this type of vibrator, precise placement does matter, so don’t be afraid to pull out a hand mirror for a quick anatomy lesson so you don’t blindly reach down there with your toy. There’s no shame in learning more about your body—and it’s never too late to learn!
You can also use a clitoral suction vibrator during penetrative sex, although it can be difficult to keep the toy in place if there’s a lot of thrusting or other types of movement going on. So, you may be better off incorporating this type of vibe into outercourse or foreplay.

Other External Vibrators
There are also some vibrators that don’t fit exactly into any of the aforementioned categories. For example, Zumio is a small, pen-shaped toy that utilizes SpiroTip™ spinning technology to stimulate the clitoris (or nipples). These fast-paced, repetitive, circular movements can be either more intense or less intense for folks, depending on how they experience sensations on their body. Zumio can also be an ideal addition to penetrative sex due to its compact and ergonomic design. While you might be less familiar with this type of vibe, it’s super easy for anyone to use, as it was even designed specifically for folks with physical limitations.

$110 at Good Vibes For Internal StimulationIf you enjoy the feeling of being penetrated, vibrators that you can insert into the vagina will lead you to some oh-so-good Os. Most internal vibes fall under the category of G-spot vibrators, although designs and features often differ. While some G-spot vibrators are specifically designed with a curve to target your G-spot, says Lisa Finn, sex educator and director of marketing at Babeland and Good Vibrations, others may have a thrusting feature, be modeled after an anatomical penis, or be designed with ridges to increase internal stimulation. Some G-spot vibrators even use the same air pressure technology as clitoral suction toys so users can feel that same sensation against their vaginal wall.
For another type of internal stimulation, any vibrating toy with a flared base, including butt plugs and prostate massagers, can provide anal stimulation. That said, many vibrators can also be used to stimulate the anus—even if they don’t have a flared base—as long as you don’t insert it inside the anus. A bullet vibe, for example, can offer heightened sensations when used around the rim of the butt, says Finn. But be careful with toys that don’t have a flared base around the anus—that’s how people wind up in the ER with a toy stuck in their digestive tract.
G-Spot Vibrators
You might be most familiar with this type of vibrator (at least, in theory), since it’s often the kind that’s shown in TV shows and films. As mentioned, G-spot vibrators are insertable vibrators that usually feature a curve to help target your G-spot—that nerve-dense area situated at the upper vaginal wall, close to the belly button, says Finn.
While G-spot vibrators are certainly larger than bullets, length and girth options abound. If you’re not sure how much penetration you enjoy, your best bet is to start with a shorter and thinner option, like the Lelo Gigi 3. But if you’re a size queen and proud of it? Go big with Fun Factory’s Tiger. And if you want to simulate the feeling of penetrative sex, try a thrusting vibrator.
How to use a G-spot vibrator:
You may not need to use lube with a G-spot vibrator if you’re already naturally lubricated, but putting some lube on the tip, head, and/or shaft can aid the insertion process and generally make the experience more enjoyable (kinda the whole point!). You can turn the vibrator on at its lowest setting before inserting it in your vagina, or wait to turn it on until after the toy is inside you—whatever feels most comfortable. Then, aim to hit your G-spot by making sure the curve of the vibrator is facing your front vaginal wall and then pull the vibrator towards your belly button. You can turn up the vibrations based on your body’s response, mimic penetrative sex by thrusting the vibrator in and out, and basically do whatever else feels good.

Now 18% Off $159 $130 at LELO$159 $130 at Lelo.com Credit: Jeff Harris$125 at Amazon Now 23% Off $129 $99 at womanizer.com For Dual StimulationWhy settle for one type of stimulation when you can have two? Dual stimulation is arguably the most pleasurable sensation because it’s a toe-curling combo of internal and external stimulation. The main type of sex toy within this category is the rabbit vibrator, whichs feature “an internal arm, meant for penetration, and an external arm, meant to sit against the clit or perineum that patch of skin between your anus and genitals,” says Finn. The result? A blended orgasm. To quote Hannah Montana, you get the best of both worlds!
Rabbit Vibrators
If you’ve ever watched the OG Sex and the City, you might remember that episode from the first season where Charlotte visits a sex shop, buys a rabbit vibrator, and then proceeds to cancel all of her plans to spend some quality time with her new toy. This was back in 1998, and that episode arguably put rabbits, and vibrators in general, on the map. (Everyone say, “Thank you Carrie, Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte.”)
These toys often have a phallic-shaped insertable piece for vaginal or anal stimulation, and an external arm that resembles bunny ears (hence the “rabbit” name) which can be used to stimulate the clitoris or perineum. Not all rabbits feature the classic bunny ears, though. For example, dual-stimulation suction vibrators, like the Lelo Enigma Double Sonic, are a specific type of rabbit where the external arm features the same air pressure technology found in clitoral suction vibrators. As the internal arm vibrates against the G-spot, the external arm sucks on the clit, replicating the feeling of penetrative and oral sex.
How to use a rabbit vibrator:
As with a G-spot vibrator, you’ll likely want to use some lube before inserting the internal arm inside you. You may also want to put an additional drop or two of lube on your clit to enhance the sensation of the external arm. Once the rabbit vibe is in place, you can pretty much just sit back and enjoy the ride. Because it’s such an involved sex toy, there’s not much variation with how you use it, but see how your body responds when you change the angle you’re holding the handle.
Some rabbit vibrators are powered by multiple motors and, consequently, have multiple sets of buttons: one to increase/decrease intensity of the internal arm’s vibrations, one to increase/decrease intensity of the external arm’s vibrations, and even another one to cycle through different pattern options. This can get a bit tricky to maneuver (especially once you’re in the throes of pleasure), so start out on the lowest vibration setting for both arms and work your way up slowly so you don’t accidentally overwhelm yourself with too much stimulation at once.

What To Consider When Shopping For A Vibrator
Material
Silicone
“Silicone is the most safe and popular material, and the one I always recommend,” says Howard. When considering a silicone toy, make sure it’s body safe and, preferably, medical grade as the skin on your vulva is highly absorbent and you don’t want your privates sucking up any harmful chemicals, adds Engle. However, because one hundred-percent silicone is expensive to produce, it may not always be an option for everyone (especially if you’re on a budget).
Metal
Another popular vibrator material: metal. It’s actually one of the most hygienic options because metal is completely nonporous and easy to sanitize, which is a nice bonus, says Engle. Most of these toys are either made with stainless steel or coated in a body-safe metal—like the Crave Vesper, which is plated in 24k gold (hello, luxury!).
In addition to being body-safe, metal vibrators are also great for temperature play because you can heat them up or place them in the refrigerator without causing much damage to the toy, says Howard. “Metal is also really good for transmitting vibrations, so if you’re a person who likes pinpointed and strong stimulation, that would be a great option in material,” adds Finn.
ABS Plastic
If your vibrator is made from ABS plastic, make sure that it’s body-safe. FYI: Some older vibrators are made from plastic that is really not ideal for putting on or in your body. But today’s toys made from ABS plastic are BPA free, durable, and strong, says Finn. Plus, they’re fully recyclable (yes, environmentally-friendly!).
But here’s where ABS plastic falls flat: It’s not 100-percent nonporous, so you must properly clean and store these toys after each use to avoid any yucky bacteria growth or mustiness. (More on that in a sec!) Oh, and if your vibrator is phallically shaped, don’t forget that condoms aren’t just for body parts—protection can help keep you and your toy safe.
TPE and Silicone Blends
Another material you might find in vibrators is TPE or silicone blends—often referred to as jelly rubber, says Finn. Compared to silicone, TPE is a cheaper material to produce, while still offering a somewhat silicone feel. But “it is a porous material, so I would not recommend these toys to share with a partner that’s not fluid-bonded or if you’re looking to invest in a piece that’s going to last you a long time,” says Finn. “TPE is not a permanent material like silicone can be.” Noted.

Additional Features
Patterns
Today’s toys also offer various levels of intensity, different patterns, and even types of pulsations, says Howard.
Temperature
“My favorite feature of toys right now are vibrators that warm up,” says Engle. “These toys have heating features inside, and it’s honestly a game changer for internal stimulation.” Warming vibrators are especially great for anal play because those muscles usually need a bit more help relaxing.
App Compatibility
App-controlled vibrators “let you play with someone no matter how far away they are,” says Finn. “Having that could be great for long distance as well as discreet play.”
Travel Lock
If getting your vibrator through TSA has ever had you shaking in your boots (same), luckily, most vibes nowadays have an airplane-mode feature. That way, you don’t have to worry about your vibrator suddenly buzzing in your suitcase in the middle of the security line, says Engle.
Today’s toys also offer various levels of intensity, different patterns, and even types of pulsations, says Howard.
“My favorite feature of toys right now are vibrators that warm up,” says Engle. “These toys have heating features inside, and it’s honestly a game changer for internal stimulation.” Warming vibrators are especially great for anal play because those muscles usually need a bit more help relaxing.
App-controlled vibrators “let you play with someone no matter how far away they are,” says Finn. “Having that could be great for long distance as well as discreet play.”

Cleaning and Storage
Types of Cleaners
Soap and Water: Really any soap works, but Finn recommends a mild, fragrance-free soap because you don’t want any residue or chemicals left behind that may irritate your body, especially if it’s a toy you use internally. Keep your vibrators farrrr away from alcohol. While it’s an effective disinfectant, it can break down the material of your toy, says Howard. (You’ve been warned.)
Sex Toy Cleaners: While warm water and soap is best, if you don’t have access to that or need a quick cleanup, spraying your toy with a sex toy cleaner and wiping it down with either a wet wipe or damp cloth towel also works, says Engle. “It’s okay to do this here and there, but if you can, try to wash your toys because they can gather bacteria and you don’t want that for yourself.”
Storage Tips
1. Make sure your toy is completely dry before putting it away.
“Always, always, always make sure your toy is completely dry before you store it anywhere,” says Finn. Putting something wet somewhere dark and shut away is a breeding ground for bacteria (gross), so make sure to pat dry your vibe before locking it away.
2. Store your toys in a storage bag or container.
Today, many vibrators come with their own cloth or satin (which Finn personally recommends) storage pouches, so you don’t have to worry about where to store it. If your vibrator is on the large side, however, it might not come with its own sack. In that case, it’s best to invest in your own or use a plastic container, like Joyboxx.
Some folks also like to keep their toys in the boxes they came in, which is great as long as the toy is completely dry because you don’t want any bacteria growing on the cardboard, says Finn.
3. Consider investing in a larger storage solution as your collection grows.
“For storage, I really like those under-the-bed shoe containers with the different pockets,” says Engle. These are great for bigger collections for various reasons: it’s discreet; it’s plastic (a sanitary material); the different compartments allow you to keep your toys separate; and, if the chest is clear, it makes finding a toy really easy. Win, win, and win!

Even More Ways To Use A Vibrator
Now that you know the basics, take things up a notch with these expert tips:
1. Tease yourself.
“When you’re oh-so close, back off a bit instead of increasing the intensity,” says Alys. “If you know a certain setting gets you off, try playing with a new vibration pattern first. Giving your body time to go through the build up again will make those incredible sensations even stronger.” In other words, edging yourself can (eventually) lead to a stronger orgasm.

2. Grind into it.
Lie face down, put the vibrator underneath you, and grind into it for a fun new way to get off. And to avoid overstimulation, Alicia Sinclair, certified sex educator, award-winning sex tech designer, and creator of Le Wand, recommends you “keep the vibrator and your hips moving,” the entire time you’re playing. Plus, the more you move, the more spots you can explore.
3. Try mutual masturbation.
If you and your partner are too tired to really get it on, you can simply masturbate together, says Engle. “You can use your vibrator on yourself while your partner is stimulating themselves with either their hands or a toy.” Plus, watching your partner masturbate can teach you a lot about how they liked to be touched, so take notes.
4. Experiment with rimming.
Use a vibrator around the rim of your or your partner’s anus for a lovely tingly sensation. This is also a great way to slowly introduce anal play before taking the full dive into penetration.

5. Dive into double penetration.
If you’re a real penetration lover, you can experience simultaneous vaginal and anal penetration for a truly filled-up feeling. Whether you use a G-spot vibrator and a vibrating butt plug, a vibrator and a finger, or a vibrator and a penis—double penetration can be double the fun for both solo and partner play time.
6. Get wet and wild.
If you’re into shower sex, vibrators can make your next time even steamier… so long as your toy is actually safe to use in water. Check first, and note the difference between a vibe being “waterproof” and “splashproof,” says Finn. Waterproof toys may be fully submerged in the bath, while splashproof toys are okay for the shower but not the tub.

Also, just because water is wet, that doesn’t make it a lubricant. Whether playing solo or with a partner, lube is a must when using a vibe in the shower. Avoid water-based lubes, as they will rinse right off, and instead, opt for an oil-based or silicone-based option—as long as you’re not using a silicone toy (silicone lube degrades that material), says Engle.
7. Use it as a massager.
While modern vibrators are designed to give your sexy spots some TLC, any sore spots will benefit from a vibrating massage before bed. “One thing I like to remind folks is that vibrators are also often marketed as personal massagers because in the early days, they were meant to be used on your back,” says Finn. “The Magic Wand, for example, makes a really fantastic back massager, and if you’re someone who experiences menstrual cramps, holding it on the lower back can feel absolutely phenomenal.” (The more you know!)
